Sideways Before

"The same way I knew which foods you've been dying to eat for the past few years. I took a quick glance at your memories to gage who you are. But..." I sat down at the other end of the table. "I haven't figured out exactly what you are."
I leaned my elbows on the table top and watched him over my fingers. I've got him opened a little with the food, now it was time to develop a trust. "Tell you what; if you can tell me what you are I'll tell you who and what I am."

I sighed. Great, so now I'm dealing with a dragon that can dig into people's memories. Wonderful.
I looked down at the plate of food while answering, "You have a deal, but it's not really necessary considering I already know you're a dragon." I sighed again, then set the shrimp back on the plate and looked at the dragon. "In any case, I'm a human and wolf hybrid, as are the rest of my friends. I don't really see how you couldn't tell that, though."
I just hope he doesn't think I'm a drake, even though I can turn into one. I thought bitterly.

"I'm glad you accepted, but you wrong about knowing what I am." A human-wolf hybrid...interesting. But that doesn't explain that dark scent about him.

"Am I? Okay, what are you, then?" I had a feeling he was right anyway. Sure, he smelled like dragon, but he also smelled... human. Could he be a hybrid as well?

I closed my eyes. "I'm only half dragon. The other half of me is like you; human." Then I opened them again. "My name is Dreyden Istalri. I'm a DragonKnight in training for the Sky Division."

"Okay..." I didn't quiet understand half of that, but I went along with it. However, him being a hybrid was the last thing I expected, but I decided not to question any of that further. I then cleared my throat. "So, anything else, Dreyden?"

"Yeah. How long have you been here? And how did you get here?"

I scratched my head. "Um, I'm not really sure about how I got here. Pretty sure I was born here, though. And I've been here as long as I can remember."

"Hm..." That doesn't make sense...unless he had the same situation as my parents only reversed.
"Well, seeing as it's unfair that I've kidnapped you and interrogated you, do you have any questions for me?"

My anger began to boil a little. "Yeah, I have a question. Why the hell did you interrogate me in the first place?" I snapped.

I was silent for a moment. "...I had to be sure you were trustworthy."

I blinked. "Trustworthy for what?"

"First enough to let you continue living in this world being what you are, and now...to ask for you help."
"Though the coincidence of you being at the same place as Butch on the same night is ridiculous, I don't think you had anything to do with him. You were just at the wrong place at the wrong time. And knowing what I know now, and you now knowing who I am as well as what, I want you to help me track down the one who's giving Butch information about the world we come from."

I sighed and leaned back in the chair, pondering this. "So, you want me to help you catch whoever's giving Butch information about your world, huh? I guess I'll help, but what if he's telling the truth about the whole past life thing?"

"I know he doesn't have a past life because I would have recognized his soul; he would have to have a gifted and powerful spirit to be able to do that, and he doesn't show a trace of reincarnation power on him. Someone or something on the outside is giving him information, and I want to know who and why."

"So, quick question. What would you do if I refused to help?"

"I won't be able to let you," I replied, my voice hard. "Know what you know now, you are now a liability to our whole operation."

I sighed. "Alright, fine. So, what do you want me to do?"

"For now, I just want you to keep doing what you have been up till now and keep an eye out for anyone or anything that doesn't seem normal for this world. Do you know how to establish a mind link?"

My eyes narrowed. "Do I look psychic to you?"

I sighed. "I guess I'll have to teach you, but until you learn you can use this." I tossed him a small device. "Hook that behind your ear. If you need to contact me just call my codename, Storm, and it'll set up the link for you. Go ahead a try it."

I looked at the strange device a little before tucking it behind my ear. "So, Storm, does it work?" I asked with a smile.

I smiled too as the device connected our minds. Pretty interesting, mind-linking, isn't it? I said without moving my lips.

I nodded. "I'm going to keep you and your friends a secret from my associates for the moment, so you need to pretend not to know me during school hours. However, before I can let you go I'll have to knock you out again. I'll leave it up to you what you tell your friends, but keep in mind it would be best not to involve them if you don't want them in danger."
